Boston Red Sox's Daisuke Matsuzaka, starting pitcher for Game 5 of the American League baseball championship series against the Tampa Bay Rays, rests during the team's workout in Boston, Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008. Tampa Bay leads the best-of-seven series 3-1 games.

The Tampa Bay Rays are giving Scott Kazmir the chance to pitch them into the World Series. The 24-year-old left-hander was moved up in the rotation so he could start in the potential AL pennant clincher against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night at Fenway Park. The move keeps Kazmir on his regular rest and bumps scheduled starter James Shields to the if-necessary Game 6 at home Saturday.

Without some significant off-field changes this time, the troubled cornerback may not get another chance to play in the NFL. Jones was suspended for at least four games Tuesday for again violating the league personal conduct policy.
Former league MVP Shaun Alexander signed with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, part of a flurry of roster activity in which the team ditched its punter, shuffled its safeties and displayed coach Jim Zorn's strong ties to his Seattle Seahawks roots. Alexander, unemployed since being cut by the Seahawks in April, signed a one-year deal to back up NFL leading rusher Clinton Portis.
